Have you ever just sat and thought about your life in the grand scheme of things? I don’t mean how many people you’ve influenced, or what you’ll be able to do to change the world in the future. I mean physical and spiritual basics. We have gone from two humans to about 7 billion humans on this earth in the time we’ve been here. Each and every specific aspect of life is, at its physical core, part of an unimaginably tiny world of atoms, molecules, and cells. The latest smartphone’s new and advanced processor is shamefully outperformed by the human brain. All our attempts to come up with “the next big thing” are swept aside when you look at how little everything has changed at its roots since the beginning of time. Solomon was certainly very wise when he said, “There is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Our world is absolutely incredible and, though we overlook it regularly, it screams out the presence of an Almighty God.
Overarching the amazing nature of creation itself is the stark reality that God is 100% sovereign over everything in existence. If you do not believe this, look to the Scriptures. His sovereignty is crystal clear all the way through (Gen. 50:19-21, Prov. 16:1, 4, 9, 33, 19:21, 21:1, Ps. 115:3, Job 12:13-16, 42:2, Dan. 4:35, Eph. 1:4-5, 11-12, Lam. 3:37, Acts 2:23, Romans 9, etc.). To me, this makes so much sense. Just think about it. The very definition of “God” is that He is as big as it gets. The toy soldier is smaller than the manufacturing machine that makes it, the manufacturing machine is smaller than the engineer who makes it, and the engineer is smaller than the God of the universe who made him. But it stops at God. God cannot be constrained by anything, and He cannot have been created by anything. If there were something higher than God, it would be the true god! We know that there is only one, Most High God. Therefore, He is the ultimate source of all reality. Nothing has its own plans or actions apart from what God gives it. To say that we ultimately choose whether or not we will go on vacation or buy a car is as ridiculous as saying that the grass blows in the direction it wants without God’s help. Who made the grass? God. Who made the wind? God. Who made the physical laws of the universe? God. Who made time? God. Therefore, the undeniable idea forms that God is in complete and utter control of the exact location and movement of each and every part of each and every blade of grass blowing in each and every current of wind at any given moment in time and space. That is a work of art, a privilege to behold. That is something truly “excellent” and “worthy of praise,” and it is definitely something we should think about (Philippians 4:8).
Yes, “God is in control,” just like the common phrase goes (see, “God’s in Control, Right?“), but in a much more vast and beautiful way than we realize most of the time. You might hear that you got a good score on an important test and thank God for His answer to the little prayer you made earlier, but do you ever take the time to see just how intricate of a process this was? God was sovereign over your schedule, and gave you enough time to study. God was sovereign over your brain’s functions while studying. God was sovereign over your car’s conditions on the day you drove to the place to take the test. God was sovereign over your alarm clock working correctly. God was sovereign over the actual questions printed on the test sheet, probably thought up a long while before you knew you were going to take the test. God was sovereign over the guesses you made (if you made any) when you honestly didn’t know the right answer to a question. Name any aspect relating to you passing the test with a good score. God was behind it.
That is the kind of God who reigns today. And the most incredible part of this is not the head knowledge of God’s sovereignty and power alone; it is when we connect this fact to the reality happening right now. You are currently, at this moment in time, reading this blog post. Your brain is working at immeasurable speeds to process the words you are reading and to interpret them into a message you recognize. God is behind every tiny detail of this moment that you could possibly imagine. He designed light so that it would work in the way it is working right now, shining from your computer screen, entering your eye, and providing information so you can see these words. He is providing for your physical needs and wants in a million ways at this very instant. If you are one of His children, He is sanctifying you every day, and He is involved in the very deepest parts of your life in order to guide you into the holiness without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).
This awesome display of God’s power demands our true fear of Him. It should leave us literally bowed low before such inconceivable glory, and it should point us to the only way to live; serving God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. We must respond to what He’s given us and let Him be our one and only God moment by difficult moment. He has allowed us to partake in something truly profound, and though we can never repay Him, we can strive to let Him have full reign of our lives, seeking His will in every situation and looking exclusively to Him for all our strength and pleasure. Let it begin right now; in this moment of God’s masterpiece of reality.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28
“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” – Psalm 16:11
“Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.” – Psalm 139:4-6
