It’s so easy to wake up, get dressed, go to school or work, do our thing, come home, and relax before going to bed again. This is how most of us spend each and every day of our lives. But every once in a while, something happens. We meet someone new and a friendship is made. We exchange ideas with others and truth is found. We make something interesting and it impacts people’s lives. Sometimes, we make a difference.
I say we do this more often. It may be difficult to work harder than is necessary on any given day. Sometimes we don’t care about the world and just want to take care of ourselves. That’s ok. Some “me time” is good every now and then. But when our whole existence is exclusively about us, we miss out on life. We stop experiencing what God made for us to experience. We were made for people. We were made to make a difference, and we all have the power to do just that.
“The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” Proverbs 13:4
It’s simple, really. Spend time with friends and look for ways to love them and show them that they are valuable. Read your Bible and pray for those who you know need help from God. Create something useful, inspiring, or fun and share it with someone else. Ask a co-worker if they go to church and eventually tell them why you love Jesus. There are a million ways to be a world-changer and step outside ourselves. It’s up to us to see these opportunities when they present themselves and take them.
“For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:8-10
Today, look around. Don’t just walk to class. Don’t just turn on Netflix. Talk to someone and make a point to encourage them or help them. Instead of consuming entertainment in your free time, consider creating something that will help someone else. Make a poster for your friend’s band. Buy someone something nice for their birthday. Write a book that helps those who are lonely. Draw or paint something that gives the heartbroken hope. Share your creations in hopes that others will be comforted, excited, or inspired by what you have made. This is the magic of the human experience, and you can participate. God gave us all these tools to do so many amazing things. God gave us all these people to love and share life with. Take the time to utilize the tools you are given to cherish the people around you and you will find joy.
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58
