Recently, I purchased a pair of nice headphones. I started hearing things in songs that I had never heard before, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for music that I want to share with you today. God made music, and I think it is one of His most incredible and intimate creations.
Each aspect of music grips the human soul like nothing else in existence. Love, fear, heartbreak, and passion are wonderfully powerful emotions. But these alone cannot give the magical element that music provides. Emotions may cause us to think and feel things differently, but music can influence our souls in ways we barely understand. That, I think, is why I love music so much and do not see anything replacing it in the human experience.
Bass thumps against our heart. Drums keep us locked in a motivating rhythm. Vocals speak to us with raw emotion and energy. Mid-range instruments keep the flow of the music going. High-range instruments challenge our expectations and rip us from reality into the song behind the beat. The result of this symphony of sounds creates in us an emotional and soul-filling experience like no other. This, of course, depends on what type of music moves us and has meaning to us.
The Bible praises God’s creation of music and urges us to use it to give Him glory.
“Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!” Psalm 105:2
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16
“Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright. Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings! Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.” Psalm 33:1-4
These verses and others in the Bible tell us to use music to give God praise. They suggest that we use all the musical skill we possess to thank God for all his wondrous works. This means singing or playing our guitars, violins, tubas, and flutes to the best of our ability and praising our savior for all He is and all He has done.
This does not necessarily mean that we must always sing worship songs. We can praise God when we play a complex piece by Mozart or cover a crazy rock song. God is pleased when we use the gifts He has given us to make music. It brings glory to Him because He made us with these skills.
So go experience God’s gift of music today. It’s everywhere. You can hear it in malls, in church, at concerts, through your earbuds, or in your car. If you have the passion for it, make music yourself. Play your piano. Sing along with the radio. Love this wonderful creation God made and thank Him whenever you hear it. He is such a glorious God. Praise Him for what He has done.
