I went to an amazing Christian seminar a while ago, and the speaker (Bill Gothard) was talking about breaking habits. He mentioned that basically any habit that isn’t glorifying God and holds you captive is sinful. For example, I used to struggle with a habit of biting my nails. Is biting your nails sinful? Not really, unless it’s damaging your body (which is the temple of God). So why would doing it all the time be sinful? Because it’s holding you captive. When I did it all the time, I was under its influence and didn’t have the self-control to refuse it.
So what do we have? A habit that should be broken (due to its sinfulness). Bill Gothard gave a very detailed process of how to go about breaking a habit, but one thing he said that’s really helped me is to read Romans 6 and 8. These are some of the best chapters to read when tempted! If you want to read them right now, then here they are in ESV:
If you read those chapters, you’ll understand why they are so helpful to read when you’re tempted to sin. What I did is read them every night before bed, but however you use or read them, they will help. Also, something Bill Gothard said is to start reciting them when you are feeling tempted.
So what if that doesn’t work? Another thing that helps is to find an accountability partner. This doesn’t mean you have to meet up with someone once a week. It could be your dad, your mom, or a family member. My dad has helped me so much over the years with struggles and temptations in my life, and I would encourage you to go to your parents or a parent figure in your life if you are struggling.
So what are your thoughts? Do you like my ideas, or do you have any objections? I’d love to hear any corrections, advice, or thoughts on this issue that you guys have. Thanks so much!
