Being a Christian in a world obsessed with sin is not easy. Sometimes it can be very hard to do what’s right; what God would want us to do if He was standing right there. At times we fall, and give in to sin, but we can overcome the pressures this world throws at us with God’s word and guidance. Here’s a verse that is very helpful when you’re trying to deal with being Christian in a non-Christian society:
“Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.” – Philippians 2:14-16
So what’s this verse saying? Part of it is telling us to do everything without grumbling or questioning. Wow. I am SO guilty of that one. That is hard, but the reason God tells us to do it is BECAUSE it’s so hard! No-one expects you to NOT be grumbling in our generation of fast food, instant online services, and lightning fast computers that serve our every whim. It’s something that people just don’t do. Nevertheless, despite the difficulty of this, it’s so very important for us to do it, because it will be noticed by the world, and either we will suffer for Christ, or they will be impacted by our actions and will want what we have; a relationship with the most high God.
Another part of this verse is pointing out that we live in a crooked and twisted generation. This is sadly very true. We live with those around us doing all the wrong things, but we as Christians NEED to stand out as those who have hope in something so much more beautiful than what our generation is pursuing. I encourage every Christian teen in our generation, and every Christian who is reading this right now to act like our title as Christian and LIVE IT! Shine for Christ, don’t just “make it work” and live like every other Christian teen you know. I can’t tell you how important it is to be the one who makes the right choice among a crooked and twisted generation. This is an incredibly important thing for us to be doing, and God commands it.
So, WHY? Why stand out? Why be different? Why struggle when it’s so much easier to just try and fit God into our lives instead of building our lives around God? Some reasons are because God will reward us, we’ll have satisfaction in him, and it will benefit our lives for the better in amazing ways. These are all very good, but in my opinion, one of the most important reasons is because God COMMANDS it. If the Creator of the universe commands it, that means you are expected to do it. God does have grace, but we should not be ignoring what God tells us to do because he’ll have pity on us.
“What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?” – Romans 6:15-16
So STAND UP FOR CHRIST! Be a light among our crooked and twisted generation! SHINE for Him, and be the person who makes the right choice! God will help you in this if you allow Him to, and He’ll do great things with you if you live for Him.
