Thank You, God

NiagaraOne very essential, yet easily forgotten part of our daily walk with Christ is thankfulness. Many times in prayer, we talk to God about all these things that have gone wrong in the world and we ask God to “fix” them. But we must get into the practice and habit of thanking Him for the overflowing bounty of perfectly good and wonderful things He’s given us.

“Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” – James 1:16-17

Everything you have, you were given. Your talents? God gave those to you. Your food? God provided it. Your money? Someone gave that to you, probably for work that you did. But what about that work? You did that, right? Well, not ultimately. God gave you that opportunity through your employer, and God gave you the mental and physical strength to accomplish the task. Every single thing in our lives is given to us. We are nothing without the overpowering grace of God revealed in life, love, and His creation. During our normal daily routine, it should be instinctive on our part to stop and sincerely say, “Thank you, God.” When the gas is cheaper than normal, we should thank God. When we have gas to put in our car at all, we should thank God. When we see His glory displayed in a spectacular sunset, we should praise Him. He gave us all these things. Shouldn’t we give credit where credit is undeniably due? Whenever we kneel in prayer to the King of kings, we should take time out of our day to thank Him for the indescribable amount of love He shows us daily in simple, yet amazingly complex things like nature, music, or relationships. We do not notice His affection toward us enough. Sure, we may post a beautiful picture on our social networks with flowers and someone dancing in sunlight with a Bible verse on it every now and then. But do we really take the time to analyze and appreciate the overwhelming love of our God when it comes to the things He openly gives to His disobedient, immature children? When you sit down and write a thoughtful list of things you’re thankful for, or just lie at His feet in submission crying to Him to open your eyes to His love, it opens up a whole new perspective on life. You notice the blessings He’s continually heaping upon you day by day. You stop your foolish anger at a person whom God lovingly crafted at the dawn of time. You start realizing that a lot of things in this world just aren’t worth it. Because God has given us all that we have, and we should praise Him for it by giving every part of our life into His hands to be used for His glory. Let us thank God for all that He gives us.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6-7

  1. Amen! EVERY breath we breathe is a gift from our Father in Heaven! God is the GIVER and so oftentimes we focus on the “gifts” verses the TRUE GIFT, which is Jesus…the Giver of the gifts. 🙂 Great post and great reminder!
